Concentration Description
_
The concentration I investigated
was repetition. I am interested by repeating objects and patterns in all types
of photography and how they are used to enhance the photograph. I have found that repetition is best used in
a photograph when it can direct the eye through the photo and heighten natural
emotions that come up when the viewer first takes the photograph in. Some of
the world's most famous and respected photographs have used this principle of
design in some form.
As I developed my concentration I found that I could use light in different ways to strategically enhance the principle of repetition in my photographs. When I took images 9, 10, and 11 I was able to use light in different ways to heighten the sense of repetition. In image 9 the orange light reflecting off of the building places focus on the repeating windows and balconies. In image 10, I used a stream of light shining vertically through the frame to complement the repetition in the photograph. Lastly when I took image 11, I added a lot of interest to the photograph by using the light focusing on a single cow eating amongst a group of hundreds of repeating cows.
Another way I was able to use repetition to enhance my photographs was to use it as a tool to move the eye around the frame. My 1st image and my 10th image do this very well. The windows in the building draw the eye from the bottom of the frame to the top. In the 10th image, the light emphasizes each step and your eye is drawn vertically through the photograph. My 3rd image also does this by using the repeating chain links and the shadows on the ground to pull your eye towards the top right corner of the frame.
Repetition can be used in many different ways to enhance a photograph and if the photographer is strategic about his or her use of repetition great images will be produced. I used repetition combined with light to add interest to my images and I used repetition as tool to draw the eye through my photographs.
